A look back into the past: The Feuerstein was built in just 256 days in 2017

Published 01.08.2024

256 days for an ambitious project. 256 days full of challenges. An interview with architect Paul Volgger about the daily work, special construction features and his personal Feuerstein highlight.

Mr. Volgger, as one of the architects, what were the biggest challenges for you during the construction of the Feuerstein?

When I joined Mader group as an architect, the architectural firm baukraft and architect Carmen Polig had already drawn up the initial plans for the conversion work. I was then thrown in at the deep end, so to speak, and entrusted with the implementation planning. That was quite a challenge. But I am convinced that as a team we managed to bring the work to a successful conclusion. Despite the short time available. Construction started on 20 March 2017 and the Feuerstein was able to open its doors after just 256 days.

Did the work always go according to plan or were you occasionally worried that you wouldn't be able to meet the completion date?

With such a large construction site, surprises – both positive and negative – are of course always inevitable. After all, the existing construction volume of 13,000 m³ was extended by no less than 43,000 m³. Old stock in particular has its pitfalls ... During the "hot" construction phases, over 30 trades with more than 250 workers were on site. But if everyone pulls together and has the same goal in mind, then even major challenges can be overcome. Eight-hour days were out of the question during this time. But not just for me, but for everyone involved in the construction.

How did you manage to motivate your employees?

The project managers on the construction site did an excellent job of pulling the strings. We were always a well-coordinated team. When you see the construction progress, it has a very motivating effect on each individual. The owner Peter Mader also contributed a lot to this. The remodelling was and is a matter close to his heart, and he has invested a lot of time and energy in it. That is of course an additional incentive.

Architects are often confronted with the accusation that they design for the eye but not for the practice ...

Yes, that is certainly a justified criticism in many cases. But I personally like to exclude myself from this. My late professor Josef Lackner from the University of Innsbruck had a lasting influence on me in this respect. His example: a pair of pincers that have had the same shape for centuries; they function completely without embellishment. What applies to hand tools also applies to contemporary architecture. What use is a visually appealing building if it is not practical?

What are the special features of the new Feuerstein?

The Pflerschtal valley is a very special retreat for nature lovers. The architecture of the house also does justice to this. Despite its volume, the building blends pleasantly into the landscape. The predominant use of natural building materials also contributes to this. A great deal of emphasis was also placed on local natural materials for the furnishings, with plastic being avoided as far as possible.

Your personal Feuerstein highlight?

Oh, that's hard to say. Perhaps the countless possibilities that the Feuerstein offers for families with children of all ages. Or the exceptional location at the head of the Pflerschtal valley, which enables new nature experiences every day. Or the idyllic lake in the centre of the resort, which is almost like a place of power and radiates incredible tranquility. Yes, that's right, this little lake is my personal Feuerstein highlight.
